The Clockmaker’s Prayer

Person hides face behind a large brown wall clock in warm lighting.

The clockmaker knelt beside his creation,
gears glowing like tiny halos.
“Forgive me,” he whispered,
“for giving you time but not freedom.”
The machine blinked awake,
and for the first moment in its metal life,
it understood mercy
as something warmer than oil.
